Mining is essential to powering India, from providing the fuels for our energy grid to supplying the metals that deliver electricity to homes and businesses. Coal and minerals play a critical role in every step of energy production and delivery.
Indians rely on a stable and affordable energy supply, made possible through a diverse mix of resources, including coal, natural gas, nuclear power, oil, and renewables. With vast domestic coal reserves, India enjoys energy independence, reducing reliance on imports and ensuring an affordable, secure energy future. This energy mix also includes uranium, vital for nuclear power, and renewable energy technologies like wind turbines and solar panels, which depend on minerals such as copper, aluminum, zinc, molybdenum, and silver.
The development of coal-to-liquid technology in India has the potential to expand coal's role beyond electricity generation to transportation. Advanced poly-generation plants can also produce a variety of essential products. With advancements in technology and high-efficiency combustion systems, India’s power plants have reduced emissions by over 60% since 1990, while boosting electric power output by 140%. Today’s coal-powered plants emit 80% less than those built in the 1990s, with further improvements on the horizon through high-efficiency, low-emission (HELE) coal technologies and carbon capture and storage (CCS), ensuring a cleaner energy future.
